Next, the remarkable Sanjusangen-do, renowned for its extraordinary hall lined with 1,001 gilded statues of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. The quiet reverence and artistic mastery of this temple make it one of Kyoto’s most memorable cultural experiences.

Later, return towards the historic districts of eastern Kyoto and enjoy a leisurely stroll through Gion, the city’s famed geisha quarter, where traditional wooden machiya houses, hidden alleyways, teahouses, and lantern-lit streets preserve the atmosphere of old Japan. Walking together through to the lively Shijo Kawaramachi area, guests are then free this afternoon to continue exploring at their own pace - whether browsing boutiques and department stores, relaxing in a café, or discovering one of Kyoto’s many excellent restaurants for dinner.

Reviews

We’ve travelled with other companies on guided tours in small groups but none offer an experience like that offered by JTTE. Instead of one guide for the duration of the tour, we had one for each region. We travelled with each long enough to become friends and to share their love of the places we visited. Farewells were always a little sad when one guide handed us over to the next, but the feeling never lingered – we were immediately off on the next leg of our adventure with a new travel companion. The guides were what made our holiday so special.

Journey to the East was professional and prompt to deal with. The guides were all lovely, had good knowledge and went out of their way to ensure everyone was having an enjoyable time -they were well spoken and had a good command of English. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend and would definitely travel with them again if we chose to do another tour of Japan.
